Three questions narrow the field
Where will you search most often? How much adjustment do you want to learn? What is the complete budget after a pinpointer and recovery tools? Answer those before comparing screens or accessory bundles.
Be precise about waterproofing
A waterproof coil does not make the control box waterproof. For surf, streams or persistent rain, check the whole-machine rating and the manufacturer's stated depth. Wet salt sand is also a ground-handling problem, not simply a water-resistance problem.
Treat target ID as a clue
The number on the screen is influenced by target orientation, depth, corrosion, nearby iron and the ground itself. Good technique means listening for repeatable signals, checking from another direction and recovering carefully—not assuming every number identifies a particular coin.
Continue by ground or budget
Compare the best detectors for UK beaches when wet salt sand matters, or the best detectors for fields for pasture and cultivated permissions. Our under £200 and under £300 guides avoid fixed price snapshots; always confirm the current Amazon price before applying the budget threshold.
For a higher ceiling, the under £500 guide focuses on meaningful step-up features. You can also compare detectors specifically for coins or select a fully waterproof detector for repeated wet use.
If the terminology is unclear, read metal detector frequencies explained and multi-frequency vs single-frequency before comparing model names. The VLF vs pulse induction guide covers the specialist technology choice, while our lightweight detector shortlist focuses on balance and long-session comfort.
For machines designed to transmit more than one frequency together, use the multi-frequency detector shortlist. Before treating a new detector as the only upgrade, our search-coil guide explains how coil size and shape change coverage, separation, balance and response.
Already own a machine? The model field guides walk through X-TERRA PRO setup and settings, SIMPLEX Ultra controls and VANQUISH 360 first use without confusing them with related models. For any detector, set up a first search before chasing more advanced settings.
If your main challenge is conductive tide-line sand, compare wet-sand metal detectors. For nail-rich land, the iron-contaminated-site guide explains why coil footprint and recovery controls matter. The VANQUISH 360 versus X-TERRA PRO comparison separates automatic Multi-IQ from adjustable single-frequency operation.
For an entry purchase, read what a cheap detector must still do and the Garrett ACE 300i field guide. Compare ACE 300i versus VANQUISH 360 for inland-versus-beach trade-offs, or older VANQUISH 340 versus current 360 before applying advice across generations. Existing owners can work through when to upgrade and whether an expensive detector is worth it before spending.
