The important difference is frequency versus control

The VANQUISH 360 uses Multi-IQ: more than one frequency is transmitted and processed during the search. The X-TERRA PRO lets the user select a single frequency appropriate to its current mode. Its 5, 8, 10 and 15 kHz options are not simultaneous Multi-IQ. That distinction is decisive for someone who frequently crosses from dry sand to conductive wet salt.

The PRO answers back with a much broader settings toolkit. It provides six search profiles, automatic/manual/tracking ground balance, adjustable recovery speed, more tone options and a 119-value target-ID range with 30 discrimination segments. The VANQUISH is intentionally simpler, with three modes, five sensitivity levels, three tones and six discrimination segments.

Why the VANQUISH 360 suits a first mixed-ground detector

On a weekend that includes a park, ordinary field and wet beach, the VANQUISH 360 asks for fewer decisions. Select the right mode, keep the sensitivity stable and sweep low and level. Its automatic Multi-IQ and Beach mode address salt without requiring the operator to choose a frequency. The 10-by-7-inch elliptical coil is also easier to place between patches of iron or around beach obstacles than a larger stock coil.

It weighs a listed 1.16 kg and collapses for transport. Its whole-detector 5 m waterproofing makes rain and careful shallow-water use possible within the manual's limits. The simplicity has limits: iron bias is fixed high, recovery is not a user control and standard audio is speaker or wired headphones. It is not the machine for someone who enjoys building custom tone behaviour.

Why the X-TERRA PRO suits a settings-led learner

The X-TERRA PRO's Park, Field and Beach profiles create more specific starting points. It allows the operator to choose single-frequency behaviour, ground balance when conditions change and adjust recovery speed in close targets. One, two, five, all-tone and depth-style audio choices can communicate more nuance once learned.

This control can genuinely help on variable inland permissions, particularly when iron or ground response makes the factory profile insufficient. It also creates more ways to make a detector unstable. A beginner who changes frequency, sensitivity, iron rejection and recovery at once cannot tell which adjustment helped.

The listed weight is 1.3 kg and the supplied V12X coil is a 12-inch Double-D elliptical. That covers clean open ground efficiently but can feel more front-heavy and see more nearby metal. A smaller compatible coil can be a better later upgrade than further menu changes in dense iron.

Wet salt sand: where the choice separates

Minelab gives the X-TERRA PRO Beach 1 for wet/dry sand and shallow water, plus Beach 2 for surf and submerged use. Its manual explains that Beach 2 changes recovery and salt handling. The detector can therefore work on wet sand, but selecting one operating frequency at a time is a different approach from simultaneous Multi-IQ.

For regular wet tide-line work, the VANQUISH is the easier recommendation between these two. For mostly dry sand and inland fields with occasional wet-sand visits, the X-TERRA PRO's broader controls may matter more. If you want both simultaneous multi-frequency and the PRO-style settings, the X-TERRA ELITE is a more direct comparison.

Field and iron performance

On mild open pasture, both can find coins and general metal objects within the limits of target size, orientation and soil. The PRO offers Field profiles and recovery adjustment for more crowded patches. The VANQUISH offers less tuning but a compact coil and a straightforward response that may help a new user learn repeatability.

On iron-rich ground, do not assume the PRO will always find more. Fast recovery can separate neighbours but may shorten marginal responses. The VANQUISH's fixed high iron bias can quiet some iron while also making particular mixed responses less obvious. Target IDs are not an identification chart

Both detectors show Minelab's ferrous and non-ferrous target-ID ranges, but processing, mode, coil, depth and nearby metal still affect the number. The PRO's finer discrimination segmentation does not make an old coin numerically certain. A bent nail can give a tempting high tone on either machine; a small coin near iron can sound broken.

Cross each signal from two directions, shorten the sweep and use pinpoint only after the initial response is repeatable. Recover a range of uncertain targets on a permitted practice site to learn the machine's language. The target-ID guide is more useful than a universal chart copied from another field.

Water protection, audio and aftercare

Both complete detectors are IP68 rated to 5 m. Check covers, coil connector and the exact manual before immersion. Standard headphones may not be waterproof, and ordinary wireless audio is unreliable under water. The PRO offers compatible wireless audio for above-water use; the VANQUISH 360 does not offer wireless audio in its published technical specification.

Rinse permitted parts after salt exposure and wait for ports to be completely dry before charging. Sand beneath a coil cover or inside a shaft collar can create wear or noise. The maintenance checklist applies whichever model you choose.

The right buying decision

Choose the VANQUISH 360 if wet salt sand will be routine, the lighter stock setup appeals and you prefer to learn technique before settings. Choose the X-TERRA PRO if most searches are inland, you want to explore single-frequency choices and audio/recovery controls, and you are willing to keep a settings notebook.

Neither has an automatic “better depth” claim. The best fit depends on the ground, target density, coil control and the amount of complexity you will actually use.

Check the precise permission and recovery method, adjust the shaft in the boots you will wear, secure the coil cable and practise with several known targets. Begin in the correct factory profile and change one variable at a time. A tidy first-day plan does more for a new detectorist than any saved programme borrowed from a different location.
