Whole-detector waterproofing comes first
A waterproof coil does not make a detector waterproof. For wading, surf or heavy weather, the control housing, cable connection, speaker and charging-port seal must all be covered by the manufacturer's rating. Every shortlist model here is rated as a complete detector to 5 m, but that does not mean every supplied headphone is submersible.
Wet salt sand creates another problem: the detector responds to conductive salt as well as buried metal. Simultaneous multi-frequency machines and dedicated salt profiles generally provide the strongest starting point. A fully waterproof single-frequency detector can still require reduced sensitivity or a calmer setup on the lower beach.
Best overall waterproof detector: X-TERRA ELITE
Minelab's X-TERRA ELITE pairs 5 m IP68 protection with Multi-IQ, Beach 1 for dry and wet sand and Beach 2 for strong salt conditions and underwater use. It also retains Park and Field profiles, so waterproofing does not confine it to the coast.
Its wireless audio is not ordinary Bluetooth and the ML85 headset is not submersible. For underwater listening, use only the waterproof headphone type and connector specified by Minelab for this detector. Check that port caps, O-rings and threads are clean before every immersion.
Best simple waterproof detector: VANQUISH 360
At 1.16 kg, the VANQUISH 360 is the lightest detector here. Automatic Multi-IQ and three modes make it approachable for beginners who expect parks, fields and beaches rather than a single specialist site.
The trade-off is adjustment. With only broad discrimination and tone choices, it gives less control over difficult iron or audio than the X-TERRA ELITE. There is no wireless audio, so the correct wired waterproof solution matters if the control box will be submerged.
Best-value simultaneous frequency: Nokta SCORE
The SCORE combines simultaneous multi-frequency, three search modes, automatic noise cancellation, vibration and a rechargeable battery in a 1.2 kg IP68 package. It is the straightforward alternative for someone who wants modern salt-ground capability without a large menu.
Its simplicity limits advanced adjustment. Confirm headphone compatibility by exact model: a detector can be waterproof while a wireless headset is only suitable above water.
Waterproof single-frequency alternatives
The X-TERRA PRO offers more inland frequency and audio control, with a dedicated 8 kHz beach setting, but it does not transmit several frequencies simultaneously. The SIMPLEX Lite is a lower-cost 15 kHz option with automatic and manual ground balance, four modes and vibration. Both are genuinely submersible; neither should be selected for regular wet salt sand solely because of that rating.
Seal care and water practice
Rinse the detector in fresh water after salt exposure without directing high pressure into seals. Remove sand from coil covers and threaded fittings, dry the machine in shade and inspect port closures before charging. Never connect a charging cable while a port or surrounding area is wet.
Do not exceed the stated depth, and remember that moving surf can place more force on a shaft and coil than still water. A smaller coil may be easier to control. Use a lanyard on the pinpointer and choose a recovery method permitted for the foreshore.

Does a waterproof coil make the whole detector waterproof?
No. Many detectors have a waterproof search coil but a weather-resistant or non-submersible control box. Check the complete detector rating before allowing the control unit near water.
Can every waterproof detector handle wet salt sand?
No. Waterproof construction protects the electronics, but stable performance on conductive salt requires suitable processing and settings. The detector still needs to be designed for the ground.
Should I rinse a waterproof detector after the beach?
Yes. With the charging port and covers secured as instructed, rinse salt and sand from the coil, lower shaft and permitted waterproof parts using fresh water, then dry the detector before storage.
