Metal detector false signals: causes and fixes
Diagnose metal detector false signals by separating electrical noise, ground response, coil movement, excessive sensitivity and difficult iron responses.

Change one thing at a time and test again over the same clean patch.
Inspect the coil cover, connector and cable before assuming the detector is faulty.
Use the highest stable sensitivity, not the highest available number.
A 60-second diagnosis
Move away from obvious metal such as fences, gates, cars and digging tools. Hold the coil still above clean ground. If the detector chatters without movement, electrical interference or an unstable setting is likely. If it stays quiet until the coil moves, look at ground response, contact with vegetation, cable movement and buried targets.
Now sweep a known clean patch at normal height. Raise the coil slightly and repeat. A signal that follows one position in the ground may be a real target or local mineral change. A signal that appears whenever the coil changes angle is more likely mechanical, sensitivity-related or caused by the cable.
Electrical interference
Power lines, phone infrastructure, electric fencing, nearby electronics and other detectors can create inconsistent audio even with the coil still. Run the detector's automatic noise cancel exactly as the manual describes, keep other coils apart and try a small position change. A selectable-frequency machine may offer a quieter frequency.
Do not reject more target IDs to fix electromagnetic noise. Discrimination changes which target responses are heard; it does not remove the source. Use the full electrical-interference checklist when stationary noise is the main symptom.
Sensitivity is too high
Maximum sensitivity amplifies weak changes from soil, interference and movement along with desirable targets. Reduce it one step at a time until ordinary sweeps are stable. A calmer detector can reveal more useful information because a repeatable target no longer competes with continuous chatter.
Minelab's detector manuals commonly recommend noise cancel and ground balance before lowering sensitivity, then choosing the highest stable setting. “Stable” must be judged while sweeping, not only while holding the machine in the air.
Ground balance or salt response
Mineralised soil can produce broad, inconsistent signals as the coil rises and falls. Run automatic or manual ground balance where the detector supports it, using the method in the manual. Keep the coil level and avoid scrubbing the surface.
Wet salt sand is conductive and can overwhelm an inland single-frequency setup. Select the correct Beach profile, reduce sensitivity if needed and keep the coil height consistent. A simultaneous multi-frequency detector is normally a stronger general solution for regular wet-sand use.
Loose cable, connector or coil hardware
Turn the detector off before touching connectors. Check that the coil connector is clean, dry and seated according to the manual. The cable should be secure along the shaft without being stretched at the coil joint. A loose loop can move through the coil's field and create a response.
Check the coil bolt and washers. The coil should hold its angle but still move when deliberately adjusted. Do not overtighten it. Inspect the cable for cuts, crushing or sharp bends; stop using damaged equipment and follow the manufacturer's service advice.
Dirt or water under the coil cover
Mineralised grit trapped between the coil and cover can move during a sweep and sound like a target. Remove the cover only as the manufacturer permits, clean both surfaces with fresh water where appropriate and dry them before refitting. After beach use, salt residue can continue causing problems even when the outside looks clean.
Waterproofing claims differ. A waterproof coil does not make the control box or connector safe to submerge. Check the product rating before rinsing any part.
Edge falsing and difficult iron
A large or shallow object can respond at the outer edge of the coil and disappear through the centre. Bent nails, rust halos and ring-shaped iron may produce a clipped high tone from one direction. Shorten the sweep, pass the centre over the estimated spot and rotate 90 degrees.
A compact response that repeats through the centre from more than one direction deserves investigation. A broad signal covering a large area may be an oversized object or service rather than a coin. Do not dig where buried utilities may be present.
Test after each change
Use one known coin and one iron object on clear ground. Confirm that the detector responds repeatably at a modest height, then return to the original noisy patch. If the fault moves with the detector after a factory reset and correct reassembly, record a short video and contact the manufacturer or retailer.
Do not open a sealed control box or attempt a cable repair that compromises waterproofing. Note the model, coil, software version, settings, ground, weather and exact symptom; that evidence makes support far more effective.
Prevent false signals next time

Why does my metal detector beep when there is no target?
Common causes include sensitivity set too high, changing ground, electrical interference, a moving coil cable, loose connectors or contact with grass and stubble. Test one cause at a time.
Can a loose coil cable cause false signals?
Yes. If the cable moves close to the coil during each sweep, the detector may respond to that movement. Secure it firmly up the lower shaft without pulling the connector tight.
Should I ignore signals that only sound in one direction?
Not automatically. One-way responses can come from iron, an angled target, masking or the edge of the coil. Shorten the sweep, turn around the target and check it from several directions.
