Your first metal detector signals: what to do next

Learn to judge the first beeps from your metal detector by repeatability, shape, tone and a second angle before digging responsibly on UK ground.

The first beep is a question, not an answer

The first hour with a detector often feels like a barrage of numbers and tones. Do not try to translate every ID into a named coin. A detector responds to conductivity, size, orientation, depth, the ground and nearby metal. A pull tab can overlap a ring; a bent nail can briefly sound non-ferrous; a coin on edge may give a broken or shifting response. Your immediate job is to decide whether there is a repeatable object at one place, not what it is.

Set up a calm machine first with the first-setup sequence. If it sounds off all the time while stationary, diagnose sensitivity or electrical interference before trying to interpret target beeps. A stable baseline makes the difference between a genuine quiet target and background chatter.

Stop, shorten, turn

When a sound catches your attention, stop walking. Sweep back across the same patch with shorter passes, keeping the coil low and level. Locate the narrowest part of the response. Turn roughly 90 degrees and cross it again. A compact signal that repeats near the same centre in several passes is a stronger dig candidate. A response that only chirps at the very end of one long sweep or moves across a broad area is less certain, though not automatically worthless.

Listen to the sound's shape as well as its pitch. Is it a brief, bounded note or a wide, sprawling signal? Does a low iron tone surround a small higher note? A jumpy number is normal for some deep, angled or adjacent targets.

What to dig first

On ordinary permitted ground, recover a sample of clean high notes, a few mixed tones and some plausible iron. This builds a local library of your field's nails, foil, bottle caps and actual non-ferrous finds. Keep within the agreed depth and recovery method. You do not need to dig every random chirp to be thorough, but rejecting every uncertain response teaches little and may miss a desirable target beside iron.

Before cutting, look for modern litter, livestock, cables, services, tree roots or protected context that makes recovery inappropriate. Choose the smallest careful plug suited to the surface. Pinpoint with the detector, remove the plug neatly, then check the plug and hole separately. A handheld pinpointer is useful when the object is small or buried in clods; it reduces accidental scraping and unnecessary enlargement.

When a good signal disappears

If the response vanishes after lifting the plug, scan the plug, hole edge, spoil and your tool. Check that the spade itself is not close to the coil. A tiny target may have moved into loose soil. Another possibility is a false response from iron shape or mineralised ground that changed when disturbed. Do not keep widening a hole indefinitely: stop at the landowner's agreed limit, backfill securely and note the uncertainty. Our pinpoint and recover guide gives a more detailed sequence.

If the detector sounds only when the cable moves or the coil touches stubble, try coil and cable troubleshooting. If it chatters across a broad area near power infrastructure, use the electrical interference guide. These are different from a target centred in one patch of soil.

Keep a small evidence log

For ten recoveries, write down the mode, approximate ID range, tone shape, repeatability and what came out. Do not create an exact 'coin number' chart: ground and depth change responses. Instead, learn patterns such as a strong wide iron object versus a narrow repeatable shallow coin. If a find may be historically significant, photograph and record its location before cleaning; follow record a find and relevant reporting guidance. The point of these first signals is informed judgement, not instant certainty.

What does a good first metal detector signal sound like?

A promising signal repeats at a compact location on several level sweeps, ideally from more than one direction. It still cannot identify the buried object.

Should I dig a signal with a changing target ID?

Sometimes. Depth, nearby iron and target angle can shift the number. Weigh tone, width, repeatability and permission rules together rather than demanding a fixed ID.

Why did the signal disappear after I cut a plug?

The target may have moved into spoil, be in the plug edge or have been a misleading iron or ground response. Recheck the plug, hole and spoil before widening within the agreed depth.

Will a pinpointer tell me what the target is?

No. It helps locate the metal within the plug, hole or loose soil. The object still needs careful recovery and, if significant, recording.
