Wet sand is a ground problem before it is a water problem
Connected salt water makes beach sand electrically conductive. A detector may respond to the broad salt matrix as the coil crosses a damp band, leading to chatter, uncertain numbers and false tones. Full waterproofing protects the detector from water within its rating; it does not determine how quietly it processes salt.
That is why this shortlist is narrower than our general UK beach detector guide. A capable single-frequency machine can search dry sand and may manage a stretch of wet sand with a dedicated mode and reduced sensitivity. For regular tide-line work, simultaneous multi-frequency Beach processing offers a more forgiving starting point.
Best all-rounder: Minelab X-TERRA ELITE
The X-TERRA ELITE combines Multi-IQ with separate Beach 1 and Beach 2 profiles. The first is intended for dry and wet sand and shallow water; the second is for stronger salt response around surf and submerged use. Its adjustable recovery speed, ground balance, iron bias and audio make it the most adaptable machine in this three-detector comparison.
Those controls are useful only when changed with a reason. Start with Beach 1, run noise cancel and assess a known target on the actual sand. Move to Beach 2 if the surf zone or stronger salt response demands it. In black sand, use the manual's ground-balance procedure and reduce sensitivity if false ferrous reports remain. Do not copy a setting from a different beach and assume it will be ideal.
The complete detector is IP68 waterproof to 5 m and its listed weight is 1.3 kg. Its larger supplied coil gives open-beach coverage, but can feel less nimble in rock pools, ridges and dense iron than a smaller elliptical option. Check exact coil compatibility before buying a second coil.
Easiest first choice: Minelab VANQUISH 360
The VANQUISH 360 uses automatic Multi-IQ through Park, Beach and All Metal modes. On wet sand, the key advantage is that the user does not have to select an operating frequency or develop a complex profile before hearing a repeatable signal. It is also the lightest choice here at a listed 1.16 kg, with a compact 10-by-7-inch elliptical coil.
The trade-off is control. Five sensitivity levels, three target tones and six discrimination segments keep the interface approachable but leave less room for a detectorist who later wants to tailor recovery or iron behaviour. It has a fixed high iron-bias setting. That can keep some ferrous trash quieter but is not a substitute for investigating uncertain edge responses.
Like the other picks, the complete unit is rated to 5 m. Its standard audio is built-in speaker or wired 3.5 mm headphones; do not assume ordinary wireless headphones will pair with this model. For submerged searching, use only the manufacturer's compatible waterproof audio arrangement.
Straightforward alternative: Nokta SCORE
The base SCORE offers simultaneous multi-frequency operation, Park, Field and Beach modes, a 1–60 target-ID scale and a complete 5 m waterproof build. Its design sits between the VANQUISH's very short control path and the X-TERRA ELITE's broader menu. That can be appealing if you want a dedicated Beach mode and a light, rechargeable detector without paying for advanced adjustments you do not plan to use.
The distinction within the SCORE family matters. The base SCORE does not have the user recovery-speed, iron-filter or ground-balance controls listed for DOUBLE and TRIPLE SCORE models. Shop by exact model, not a review video that says only “SCORE”. Those omissions do not make its Beach mode ineffective; they define the limits of how much you can tune it when conditions become difficult.
Multi-frequency is helpful, not magic
Simultaneous multi-frequency gives the processor information from more than one frequency during the same sweep. On conductive salt, a well-designed Beach profile can distinguish broad ground response from a compact metal response more reliably than a basic inland setting. But wet black sand, moving water, coil impacts and electrical interference can still make a premium detector noisy.

The beach has several different zones
Dry upper sand usually permits a wider range of detectors. The damp transition can change within a few steps. Fully wet sand may contain a connected salt layer. Wash and shallow surf add moving water and harder recovery. Choose settings at the zone where the coil will actually spend most of the session, and pause to retest when crossing a moisture boundary.

A practical first-hour setup
- Check the precise beach permission, protected areas, tide and exit route.
- Fit the coil cable and close every waterproof cap as the manual directs.
- Select the correct Beach profile before increasing sensitivity.
- Run noise cancel if provided and ground balance where the model requires it.
- Sweep a known modern coin on the actual sand, then listen for stable repeatability.
- Lower sensitivity one step at a time if salt or black sand creates chatter.
- Keep the coil level and test targets from two directions.
Do not use discrimination to hide a ground-response problem. A high target ID can still be a bottle cap or awkward iron, and a low number can belong to jewellery. Recover only where digging is allowed, refill holes and remove sharp rubbish safely.
Waterproofing and audio limits
All three complete detectors are rated IP68 to 5 m, but water protection depends on correctly fitted caps and the exact conditions in the manual. Headphones and connectors have separate ratings. Bluetooth and ordinary wireless radio do not work reliably underwater.

Choose VANQUISH 360 for the clearest first detector that can follow the tide line without many decisions. Choose the base SCORE for a straightforward multi-frequency alternative when its simpler control set suits you.
Compare the exact retailer bundle, coil and included audio before ordering. A different bundle name may not mean a different detector, and retailer prices and availability can change.
Before the first search
Check who owns and manages the exact beach, including any dry upper section and tidal foreshore. Crown Estate foreshore terms do not automatically cover every beach.
