Match the detector to the field, not the fantasy find
Pasture, recently cultivated soil and iron-rich occupation ground ask different things of a detector. A quiet pasture may reward patient coverage and a larger coil; a busy field near an old settlement can contain nails and fragments close to worthwhile targets, making recovery behaviour and disciplined cross-sweeping more important. Soil moisture and mineralisation can also change how stable a machine feels from one visit to the next.
Begin with access. The best detector is wasted without explicit permission, a clear finds agreement and a site that can be searched without harming crops, livestock, drainage or archaeology. Once that is settled, choose the control level you will actually learn.

Keep the coil low and level without striking crop stems or the ground. Overlap each pass, slow down in busy areas and check a promising response from roughly 90 degrees. If the signal vanishes, shifts or becomes one-way, investigate carefully rather than letting a single target number decide.
Recovery and field condition
Never enter planted ground or work close to livestock without agreement. Avoid waterlogged pasture where plugs will smear and fail to close cleanly. On cultivated soil, recover with the method the landowner permits, refill holes and remove sharp iron rather than leaving it on the surface.

Write down who granted permission, the areas excluded from searching, access and parking arrangements, and how finds will be shared or retained.
