Minelab X-TERRA PRO: setup, settings and UK field use
Learn the X-TERRA PRO's modes, selectable frequencies, ground balance and first-field setup, with honest limits for UK fields and salt beaches.

What the X-TERRA PRO is good at
The X-TERRA PRO is a useful ownership step for someone who wants more control than a simple switch-on-and-go detector, but does not need to learn a deeply layered menu. Minelab specifies Park, Field and Beach modes with two profiles each, selectable single frequencies, automatic noise cancel, automatic/manual/tracking ground balance and recovery speed from 1 to 3. The whole detector is IP68-rated to 5 m. That combination suits UK inland permissions and occasional beach work, provided you understand the salt-sand compromise.
It is important not to confuse the PRO with the X-TERRA ELITE. The PRO's Pro-Switch selects one transmit frequency at a time; the ELITE runs Multi-IQ simultaneous multi-frequency. A dedicated Beach profile is helpful, but it does not turn selectable single-frequency operation into simultaneous Multi-IQ.
Set it up before the first permission
Fit the shaft to your height so the coil rests nearly flat ahead of your boot without a stretched arm. Secure the coil cable around the shaft with enough slack at the lower end for the coil to pivot. Align the connector carefully, rather than forcing it. Charge the detector, check the coil bolt and skid plate, and learn how to enter pinpoint before leaving home. On clear inland ground, start in Field 1 or Park 1 with factory discrimination. Sweep an ordinary coin, a small piece of foil and an iron nail on the surface separately, then listen to how each changes when the coil is raised. This is a controls lesson, not a depth test: air tests differ from buried targets. Do not memorise a single target-ID number as a coin identity.
Which mode and frequency should you choose?
Park 1 is a simple first profile for modern coins and larger jewellery; Minelab's published default is 10 kHz. Field 1 is an equally useful general inland starting point. Park 2 and Field 2 default to 15 kHz and are intended for smaller targets and denser target conditions, with a more active response. Do not assume Profile 2 is always deeper. Listen to the ground and choose the calmer useful response.
Within Park or Field, 5, 10 and 15 kHz are selectable. Begin at the profile default. A change in frequency can alter how a target and the ground respond, but it is not a substitute for good coil coverage. At the beach, the available transmit frequency is 8 kHz: Beach 1 is the sensible starting point for dry or wet sand, while Beach 2 is designed for stronger salt signal and underwater use. A repeatable first-field routine
With the coil clear of metal, switch on away from the car, fence and other active detectors. Run automatic noise cancel. Ground balance according to the manual and the site conditions; a change from pasture to mineralised or salty ground deserves another check. Raise sensitivity until false responses appear, then back it off enough to make a genuine faint target audible. Maximum sensitivity is not the goal.
Walk a small area with overlapping, level sweeps. Investigate a signal by shortening the swing and checking at roughly right angles. Record which responses remain in one compact place and which break up or move. Dig a sample of targets within your permission rules. Where the specification has limits
The supplied V12X 12-by-9-inch elliptical coil is useful for open ground, but a smaller compatible coil can isolate targets around dense iron. Buy only a coil explicitly listed as compatible with this detector. Recovery speed can help in crowded ground, but its faster settings may shorten faint responses. Wireless audio is Minelab's compatible system, not ordinary Bluetooth; Minelab identifies ML85/ML105 and WM09 compatibility in its FAQ. Check the exact accessory before ordering.
The waterproof rating does not remove the need to inspect seals and clean salt away after use. Do not open connectors wet or charge with damp contacts. Verdict for a UK owner
Choose the X-TERRA PRO if you value adjustable ground behaviour, frequency choice and a waterproof detector, and are willing to learn the controls. If wet salt sand is your main ground and you prefer fewer settings, a simultaneous multi-frequency alternative deserves comparison. Whichever you choose, the first improvement is usually a stable baseline, a level coil and careful recovery—not a more aggressive menu setting.

Is the X-TERRA PRO simultaneous multi-frequency?
No. It selects one frequency at a time: 5, 10 or 15 kHz in Park and Field, and 8 kHz in Beach. X-TERRA ELITE is a different Multi-IQ model.
What mode should I use first on a UK field?
Field 1 is a sensible general baseline. Start with factory discrimination, run noise cancel, set ground balance as the manual requires and use stable sensitivity before making finer changes.
Can the X-TERRA PRO go underwater?
Minelab rates the complete detector IP68 to 5 m, provided it is assembled and used within the manual's instructions. Check that audio accessories have their own suitable rating.
Will ordinary Bluetooth headphones pair with it?
No. Minelab says the X-TERRA PRO uses its compatible wireless audio system rather than ordinary Bluetooth; check the listed headphones or module before buying.
