Cheap metal detectors: what is worth buying in the UK?

What a low price has to buy

A cheap detector is worthwhile if it can give a repeatable response on the ground you may lawfully search. At minimum, look for stable sensitivity adjustment, a coil that stays close to the ground, a practical target indication, replaceable or serviceable power arrangements and an instruction manual for the exact model. A dramatic depth claim without a target, soil and coil specified is not a useful buying metric. Our depth guide explains why.

First separate budget from value. If a package includes a small digging tool and bag you will not use, those extras do not make the detector better. If it needs a pinpointer, headphones, batteries and a cover to become usable, compare the real kit cost. Avoid assuming that “waterproof coil” includes the control box. Wet salt sand is particularly demanding; dry and wet sand are different buying cases.

Two reasonable starting directions

The X-TERRA Voyager is a simple, known-brand package with wired headphones, bag and small digger. It is better viewed as an occasional inland or dry upper-beach starter than a salt-water specialist. The coil is waterproof to its stated limit; the control box is not. Its listed 1.3 kg weight also deserves an in-hand check. If the bundled items are unwanted, compare the detector alone against another option rather than valuing the box at face value.

The SIMPLEX Lite brings a fully waterproof body and more ground-control learning room. Its single-frequency platform is not the same as simultaneous multi-frequency on conductive wet salt sand. Where very cheap detectors disappoint

Unstable audio turns every sweep into a guessing game. A short non-adjustable shaft causes poor posture; a loose coil cable creates false signals; a proprietary battery or broken hinge without spares can end the hobby early. If a seller cannot identify the manufacturer, manual, coil size, warranty and actual water boundary, save the money. A basic air test is useful for learning tones but cannot prove depth or stability in mineralised soil.

Second-hand can be better value, but only if you can test the exact machine and inspect the coil cable, control housing, battery compartment and ownership history. A sensible buying threshold

Budget for a suitable recovery method, a finds-and-rubbish pouch, transport and permission travel. Do not buy a spade before you know whether digging is allowed or turf can be restored. Spend the first month learning level sweeps and repeatable signals; the beginner practice plan is free and often reveals more than a more expensive detector. If a machine is persistently unstable after following its manual, its low purchase price is no bargain.
