Used value for a first inland detector: Nokta SIMPLEX Lite
The SIMPLEX Lite is a current 15 kHz detector with full 5 m waterproof rating, automatic or manual ground balance and useful beginner controls. That makes a clean used example attractive for fields and freshwater if the saving over a new machine is meaningful. Its single frequency is a compromise for repeated wet salt sand; do not pay a “beach machine” premium merely because the case can be submerged.
Inspect the charging cover, headphone and coil connectors, shaft clamps, screen, buttons and coil ears. Ask about salt exposure, repairs and whether the original charging cable is included. A visibly damaged seal or intermittent response is not a small cosmetic issue on a waterproof detector.

Test the actual coil on several known objects at sensible sensitivity and check every button and audio path. Move the shaft and coil cable gently while listening for intermittent signals. Ask about battery life, firmware history, water exposure, returns and exactly what is included. Do not “test” waterproofing by immersing a stranger's machine.
