Metal detecting in woodland in the UK

Learn when woodland metal detecting is permitted in the UK, how to protect roots and archaeology, and how to search leaf litter safely and methodically.

First establish who can grant permission

A public path through a wood gives access along the route, not permission to search or excavate beside it. Private woods, Forestry England land, National Trust property and council woods can have different owners, managers and byelaws. Forestry Commission byelaws prohibit operating a metal detector on land to which they apply unless authorised. Ask the actual manager for written consent identifying the compartment, dates, access and whether any ground disturbance is allowed. Check a map for scheduled monuments, known archaeological features and protected habitats. A landowner cannot simply waive the rules for a scheduled monument. A Site of Special Scientific Interest may have operations requiring separate consent; the owner or occupier must check the site's list before allowing the work. Read the wood without treating every feature as a target

Old tracks, coppice boundaries and former clearings can explain modern or older metal, but a bank, charcoal platform, hollow way or building trace may be part of the archaeological record. Record and seek advice rather than digging through a visible feature. Modern forestry debris—fence wire, nails, cartridges and machinery fragments—can dominate the audio. Never identify an object as harmless from the detector tone alone.

Start in a low-impact clearing explicitly included in the permission. Divide it into short lanes between stable landmarks and keep the coil close without scraping roots or vegetation. Wet leaves can hide holes and snag a cable, so check the coil cable and shorten the sweep near saplings. The field-gridding method works at a smaller scale here.

Tune for a noisy, uneven surface

Begin with a familiar factory profile. Noise cancel if the machine provides it, then lower sensitivity until the detector remains stable. Do not silence all iron at once: a desirable target can sit beside a nail and sound clipped. Revisit a compact response from two angles and reduce sweep length around clutter. A standard coil is a sensible starting point. A smaller compatible coil may improve manoeuvrability between stems and target separation, but it covers less area. Do not buy a coil to solve a basic permission or access problem; coil size and compatibility come after site choice.

Protect roots and the forest floor

If consent is for surface scanning only, do not dig. If shallow recovery is explicitly allowed, stop at roots, compact undisturbed material or a feature you cannot reinstate. Never chop roots to reach a signal or lever against a living tree. Keep excavated soil contained, check the object in the loose spoil with a pinpointer, then restore the ground as the manager requires. A pinpointer is a locating aid, not authority to enlarge the hole.

For a grouped find, structural material, suspected human remains or possible ammunition, stop and follow the dangerous-finds procedure or grouped-finds guidance. Note the private location accurately before moving anything safe to move. Report potentially important objects through the appropriate service.

Leave a usable route and a useful record

Check for active forestry work, falling branches, ticks, poor reception and an exit route before setting out. Do not block extraction tracks or enter closed compartments. At the end, remove safe modern litter, clean footwear to avoid moving soil or invasive material, and give the manager a concise record of where you searched and what you found. A carefully documented small area is better than a large wood searched without boundaries.
