Define 'shallow water' before buying

There is a large difference between rain, a submerged coil and immersing the control housing. Read the exact manufacturer's rating for the detector, its headphone connector and every accessory. A rating is a laboratory equipment boundary, not a promise that an older seal, open port or damaged connector is sound. If the task is only wet grass or a little fresh-water edge work, a properly rated detector may be useful without entering water at all.

SCORE: a simpler waterproof body

Nokta specifies a 5 m waterproof rating for the SCORE and simultaneous multi-frequency operation. It is the easier choice if the user values familiar controls and does not need extensive audio tuning. Do not transfer that rating to an unrelated headset or third-party coil. Inspect the port cap and seals before each outing.

SIMPLEX Ultra: inland water, with a salt caveat

The SIMPLEX Ultra is also specified to 5 m, but uses a selected 15 kHz frequency rather than simultaneous multi-frequency. It is a credible choice for freshwater margins where the detector behaves steadily. On salty wet sand it may demand more careful settings and may not match a stable multi-frequency beach setup. Match the waterline to the real task

For rain and wet grass, full submersion capability may be more than you need; comfort and a sound weather-resistant setup can be the better priority. For a calm freshwater margin, assess footing and bank permission first, then inspect the complete detector and audio system before any immersion. For salt-wet sand, stable response to conductive ground matters separately from waterproofing. For surf or moving river water, none of these product ratings makes the site safe to enter. These are different use cases, so avoid paying for a depth rating as a substitute for the frequency and access decision.

After any suspected leak, switch the detector off and follow its manual or dealer advice; do not charge or repeatedly test a wet connector.
