Metal detector battery care: AA and rechargeable models
Keep a metal detector battery reliable with model-specific charging, AA handling, storage and safe service advice for UK detectorists.

Removable AA cells
Garrett specifies four AA batteries for the ACE 300i. Minelab specifies four AA cells for the older VANQUISH 340 and allows compatible NiMH rechargeables under its manual. Use a matched set of the correct type and orientation; do not mix old and new, alkaline and NiMH, or cells of different charge states. Never attempt to recharge an ordinary alkaline cell. If carrying spares, keep contacts protected so keys or coins cannot short them.
For long storage, follow the exact manual on removing cells. Check the compartment for moisture or leakage before fitting a new set, and ensure its cover seats properly. If contacts are corroded or the door is damaged, do not force them or assume a waterproof seal still works. Garrett's ACE control box is not submersible merely because its coil is waterproof. Internal rechargeable packs
The current VANQUISH 360 uses an internal lithium-ion pack and magnetic USB charging, not four field-swappable AAs. Charge on a dry, clean surface with the specified connection; inspect the external contacts and cable before use. Do not charge a unit with suspected water ingress, damage, swelling, unusual heat or odour. Do not improvise a battery replacement through a waterproof control housing. Authorised service preserves the intended sealing better than an unverified home repair.
Minelab's X-TERRA PRO manual says its internal lithium-ion battery should be fully charged at least every three to four months if unused, while also noting gradual performance loss over time. Treat that interval as model-specific, not a blanket rule for every detector. Check your own manual for its storage state, temperature range and charging routine. A dry, moderate-temperature cupboard away from metal tools and damp kit is more sensible than a hot car or wet bag.
Cold days and declining run time
Battery performance can feel worse in cold conditions. Start with a charged pack or fresh matched cells and keep spares dry; do not heat a battery directly. If run time drops repeatedly in normal conditions, record the duration and settings before assuming a fault. A poor cable, failing cell or ageing pack may be involved. Dispose of spent batteries responsibly
Do not put loose batteries among sharp field scrap or found objects. Insulate and carry spent cells safely for an appropriate battery collection point. Never dismantle a sealed pack for ordinary disposal. A replacement detector is justified by the whole machine's condition and capabilities, not one easily corrected charging habit; see when to upgrade.
