Pulse-induction beach detectors: who needs one?
Understand when a pulse-induction beach detector is worth considering in the UK, what discrimination it gives up, and when a multi-frequency VLF is wiser.

Check the beach, not the buzzword
Compare a specialist PI with a stable multi-frequency machine on the beach you actually have permission to search. Ask whether extra ground handling offsets digging more iron and foil.
Check the exact specialist model, service support and supplied coil; a VLF alternative is a different purchase.
What pulse induction changes
A PI detector transmits pulses and analyses the return differently from a conventional VLF detector. The practical appeal is resistance to difficult salt/mineral response. The cost is often less useful discrimination, which means more time digging ferrous rubbish and modern debris. On a clean, broad salt-sand site, a specialist PI can make sense for an experienced searcher. On a busy resort beach with bottle caps and fishing tackle, start by testing a modern multi-frequency beach programme. The wet-sand guide shows how to obtain a stable baseline. If the main question is jewellery, remember that both gold and foil can give low-conductive responses; there is no reliable “gold-only” setting.
A real PI example: Garrett Sea Hunter Mark II
Garrett's Sea Hunter Mark II manual identifies it as a pulse-induction instrument and describes salt/ground handling and underwater use. It is an example of the type, not a current Amazon UK recommendation. Check current supply, support, warranty and replacement parts directly before shopping. Do not mistake a similarly named VLF model for it.
A second example sometimes suggested online is Minelab's SDC 2300. Although that machine uses PI, Minelab's own guidance says it does not recommend the SDC 2300 for beach detecting because discrimination and target ID are absent. A goldfield-oriented PI is not necessarily the right salt-beach choice.
We have deliberately not called either example a ranked Amazon pick. The guide currently has no exact PI-beach model whose UK listing, included coil and Amazon image meet our catalogue checks. A generic PI search result would be less useful than the correct model's manual and a demonstration on the beach you intend to search.

A beach check that can change the answer
On a beach where detecting is permitted, note whether a correctly set multi-frequency detector is genuinely unstable on the wet section you want to cover. Count how often repeatable responses turn out to be modern iron or sharp litter on a short, safe test lane. If the VLF is already stable and the lane is rubbish-heavy, a PI's weaker discrimination may cost more useful search time than it gains in ground handling. If the VLF remains noisy after sensible setup and the site is comparatively clean, ask for a PI demonstration with the exact coil and audio arrangement you would buy. The comparison is about usable signals and recoveries, not an air-test depth claim.
What to check before committing to PI
Ask four questions: Is the search site legal and safe? Is salt/mineral noise genuinely beyond a correctly set multi-frequency detector? How much iron is present? Can you access service and spares for the exact PI model? Borrow or test where possible. Do not use a claimed air-test depth as evidence for actual wet-sand performance. A beach's tide channels, owner rules and protected areas remain the hard limits. Plan a generous exit using our tide guide; no detector is worth a risky recovery.
