Recognise ground noise before changing machines
Mineralised soil is not a single UK soil type and a red-brown colour does not prove a particular mineral level. A response that moves with every sweep, follows patches of ground or remains when the coil is lifted away from a target may be ground noise. First check the cable, nearby electrical sources, coil contact with stones and the manufacturer's noise-cancel procedure. Then establish a stable ground balance where the machine provides it. Reduce sensitivity in small steps if needed; a quieter repeatable signal can be more useful than a loud unstable one.

A useful comparison on your own soil

Note whether each detector remains quiet over clear soil, gives a repeatable response when the coil crosses the object from two directions, and allows you to tell nearby iron from the test object without turning sensitivity down so far that useful signals disappear. Repeat after a careful ground-balance adjustment where the model supports it. This does not replicate buried-target performance, but it reveals whether a detector is manageable on your ground.
A hot rock, electrical interference and a loose coil cable can mimic a difficult site. If the noise persists with the coil held still and away from the soil, troubleshoot those causes before calling the ground mineralised. The best buying answer may be a setup repair, not another machine.
Before deciding a detector is underperforming
Choose a small authorised test lane away from obvious metal, keep the same coil, object, orientation and sweep height, then compare one setting at a time. Air tests cannot reproduce mineralised soil. If a machine remains erratic at a moderate sensitivity with a sound cable and correct setup, consult its manual or dealer before buying another detector. Ground conditions never override landholder permission, protected-site boundaries or careful recovery.
