What actually helps with hammered coins?
A hammered coin may be thin, clipped or set edge-on. Its response is shaped by size, alloy, depth, soil and adjacent iron; no fixed target-ID range reliably identifies one. Seek a detector that remains stable on the actual soil and lets you hear a short repeatable signal. Work a small permission methodically, cross-check from another angle and vary sweep speed before increasing sensitivity. A high frequency or Multi-IQ mode is a tool, not proof that a coin will be found.
On cultivated land, maintain coil height across the ridges. In pasture, do not prise up dry turf for a speculative faint tone. In dense iron, a smaller compatible coil can make individual responses easier to isolate, but covers less ground and may behave differently on deep targets. Avoid chasing every clipped chirp by turning sensitivity up; first slow down, keep the coil level across the furrows and cross the response. A short repeatable sound deserves investigation, but a target-ID number is not a coin diagnosis.
To compare two detectors fairly, keep the same permission, known surface target, sweep direction and approximate coil height. Note how consistently each response can be found again, especially near ordinary iron. That is a more useful learning exercise than a promised “hammered coin depth”, which changes with the coin, soil and orientation. If an older object is recovered, its position and association with other finds are part of the result, not disposable details.
Before you search a promising field
Confirm the landholder's consent, the exact boundary, protected status and the finds agreement. Historic maps and recorded finds can shape a research question, but never make a scheduled monument or another protected site searchable.
