Accessibility is a whole-session question

A detector's published mass is only a starting point. The distance from handle to coil, angle of the wrist, armrest fit, shaft length and how much the coil catches on grass all affect fatigue. Try the exact machine with its supplied coil for ten or fifteen minutes, not only a brief lift. A harness may shift load but can add setup, snagging and balance problems; it is not an automatic solution. There is no one detector that fits every mobility need.

Lightest listed choice: VANQUISH 360

Minelab lists the current VANQUISH 360 at 1.16 kg, with straightforward Multi-IQ operation and full 5 m waterproofing. Its simple controls reduce fiddling during a search, which may suit someone who wants to concentrate on footing and sweep. The grip geometry is still personal, and a waterproof specification does not imply safe access to water or uneven shore. Unlike older VANQUISH models, the 360's control unit is submersible within Minelab's stated limit.

Another light option: Nokta SCORE

Nokta lists the SCORE at 1.2 kg. It offers simultaneous multi-frequency and a straightforward control set, but the tiny difference in listed mass from the VANQUISH 360 does not tell you which feels lighter in motion. Compare grip, arm cuff and coil response on your likely terrain. If one-handed controls are important, operate the menu yourself before deciding.

Budget-conscious alternative: SIMPLEX Lite

The SIMPLEX Lite is also listed at 1.2 kg and offers vibration, which may be useful when audio alone is difficult to use. It is single-frequency and can be less settled on wet salt sand than the multi-frequency options. Do not infer that vibration alone solves hearing, dexterity or balance needs; test the whole setup.

Recovery and route design

The hardest part of a trip may be kneeling, rising, carrying finds or crossing a stile—not swinging. Agree the precise permission and access with the landholder, choose firm level ground and keep the return route short. A companion can help with lawful recovery if that arrangement works for everyone, but do not assume they will dig every signal. A standing tool or long-handled sand scoop may reduce bending in suitable ground; it does not justify digging fragile turf or unsafe beaches. Carry water, a charged phone and a rest plan, and stop before fatigue makes the return difficult.

Before committing to a detector

Try the machine with your clothing and gloves. Adjust shaft length and armrest, sweep slowly over a small permitted practice patch, use the controls and rehearse what happens after a signal.
