Buy a recovery tool, not a depth contest
A pinpointer locates a target within the hole, plug or loose spoil after the full-size detector has narrowed the area. More range is not always better: excessive sensitivity can make the whole sidewall respond and can become unstable in mineralised soil. Fast retuning, predictable alerts and a shape you can control with gloves often matter more than an impressive air-test distance.
All three choices use audio and vibration to intensify as the probe approaches metal. Their useful differences are waterproof depth, sensitivity control, interference behaviour, lost alarms and how the tip resists abrasion.
Best all-round pinpointer: Garrett PRO-Pointer AT
The orange Garrett is waterproof to 6 m, has three sensitivity levels, proportional audio and vibration, an LED, a lost alarm and automatic power-off. A quick press retunes the probe, which can narrow the response around a large target or calm it in mineralised ground and wet salt sand.
Its single button also changes sensitivity and selects silent vibration mode, so learn the sequence at home. The bright housing is easy to see beside a hole, and a moulded lanyard loop provides another safeguard, but neither feature helps if the pinpointer is put down outside the search area.
Best for an extra ferrous clue: Minelab PRO-FIND 35
The PRO-FIND 35 offers five sensitivity levels, ferrous tone ID, audio and vibration, a lost alarm, LED light and 3 m waterproofing. Minelab's DIF design disengages the probe's magnetic field when it is switched off to reduce interaction with an operating detector.
The different ferrous response can help when a nail remains in the sidewall, but it is not a laboratory identification. Target size, orientation, nearby metal and soil can affect the clue. Use it alongside the main detector response and what the recovery reveals.
Best for replaceable wear protection: Nokta Pointer
The Nokta Pointer includes two hard-shell tip covers, one with a scraping edge, so normal abrasion occurs on a replaceable part rather than directly on the probe body. It offers user-adjustable sensitivity, audio-only, vibration-only or combined alerts, an LED and a five-minute lost alarm followed by automatic shut-off.
The current manufacturer page lists an 18.2 kHz operating frequency and IP67 waterproofing. Some retailer descriptions still show older specification text; we use the current manufacturer figure. IP67 is useful for wet recoveries and brief immersion, but buyers wanting a stated multi-metre depth should choose the Garrett or Minelab.
How to use a pinpointer without damaging a find
First pinpoint with the detector and cut beside the estimated target, not directly through it. Pass the probe around the plug and hole walls with light contact. If the entire area responds, reduce sensitivity or retune against the soil. Do not use the probe as a lever, chisel or substitute digging tool.
When the response tightens, remove soil by hand in thin layers while wearing gloves. Stop scraping if you see metal, pottery, bone, fabric or a compact group of objects. A significant or fragile find needs its location and surrounding context recorded before enthusiastic cleaning removes evidence.
Interference and false signals
A pinpointer can interact with the search coil, particularly when both are close and active. Move the detector coil away from the hole, use any frequency-shift or interference feature described in the manuals, and retune the pointer after placing its tip against clean soil. Replace a weak battery before assuming the unit has failed.
Salt water and mineralised soil can also make a probe respond broadly. Lowering sensitivity is often more productive than repeatedly chasing an unstable maximum-depth setting. Rinse a waterproof pinpointer with fresh water after beach use and check the battery-cap seal for grit before the next immersion.
Before the first search
Fit the holster where the pinpointer can be returned one-handed without interfering with the detector arm cuff or digging tool. Attach the lanyard if the site is overgrown or the probe will be used in water. Carry a spare correct battery in a dry container if the model uses a 9V cell.
