Headphones make weak changes easier to hear and reduce nuisance to other site users, but the connection must match. Check four things: socket size, mono or stereo wiring, waterproof connector, and the detector's exact wireless protocol. A 3.5 mm plug may still need a sealed threaded connector for rain or immersion.
Latency is the delay between the coil passing a target and the sound reaching your ears. Excess delay shifts the apparent target position. Manufacturer low-latency systems are designed to keep recovery placement coherent; a generic Bluetooth music headset may pair yet still feel late.
Best for newer Minelab detectors: ML85
The ML85 uses Minelab's low-latency 2.4 GHz system and is listed for MANTICORE, EQUINOX 700/900, X-TERRA PRO and X-TERRA ELITE. The manufacturer states up to 10 m range, 35–40 hours of operation, a three-hour charge and a 221 g weight. A detachable 3.5 mm cable provides a wired fallback.
The wireless protocol is proprietary, not ordinary Bluetooth. It does not make the headphones waterproof, and compatibility does not extend automatically to older Minelab detectors. Confirm the exact detector name in Minelab's current documentation.
Best for compatible Nokta detectors: BT Low Latency
Nokta's BT headphones use aptX Low Latency and provide onboard power, pairing and volume controls plus a 3.5 mm socket. They are the intended wireless choice for supported Nokta detectors including The Legend.
Compatibility varies. The SIMPLEX Lite, for example, does not provide the Bluetooth feature found on higher SIMPLEX models. Check the current detector manual and software notes rather than assuming every Nokta control box will pair.
Best wired specialist option: Koss UR30
Minelab's Koss UR30 accessory uses a 6.35 mm plug and is specified for the GPZ 7000, GPX 5000/4500 and CTX 3030 families. A wired set avoids charging and wireless pairing, which can be valuable on long sessions.
The large plug is not a direct match for many current 3.5 mm detectors. An adapter may change weather sealing or strain the socket, so use only a connection arrangement supported by the manufacturer. The UR30 is not waterproof.
Wireless, wired or waterproof?
Wireless is convenient around a spade and finds pouch, but it adds a battery and model-specific pairing. Wired audio is predictable and can be cheaper, but route the cable so it cannot catch on the handle or be pulled at the socket. Fully underwater detecting requires dedicated waterproof headphones and the correct sealed connector—not a rain-resistant land headset.

Fit and safe awareness
Over-ear pads can improve isolation in wind, but isolation also reduces awareness of people, livestock, traffic and changing surf. Keep volume moderate and leave enough environmental awareness for the site. Check comfort with glasses, a hat and the clothes you actually detect in.
Before the first search
Pair and test at home, charge the headset, pack its cable and confirm the detector reconnects after both devices are restarted. Carry a safe fallback—usually the built-in speaker or supported wired lead—rather than losing a permission to one flat battery.

Wired headphones are simple and avoid charging, while purpose-built low-latency wireless systems remove a cable around the recovery area. Compatibility and delay matter more than the connection type alone.
Can I use ordinary Bluetooth headphones with a detector?
Only if the detector supports them, and standard Bluetooth may introduce noticeable audio delay. Check the detector manual for supported codecs, modules or proprietary wireless headphones.
Do waterproof detectors need waterproof headphones?
Only when the headphone connection or headphones will be submerged. A waterproof detector may require a dedicated underwater connector, so do not assume ordinary headphones preserve its water rating.
